Do You Know What Your Dog Is Saying?

April 16, 20252 min read

Your dog is constantly "talking" to you, do you know what they are saying? Communication is a huge part of your relationship with your dog!

Since dogs can't verbally tell you what they are thinking or feeling it's important you learn how to read your dog's body language. Spoiler alert: yawning doesn't always mean your dog is tired.

Learning to read your dog's body language helps strengthen your relationship, helps build human-to-dog and dog-to-human trust, helps you understand why your dog is doing a particular behavior, and helps you quickly recognize when a situation needs to be changed.

To understand what is really going on with your dog you will want to look at the whole picture including their body language and the context of the situation. For example: when your dog growls while playing tug-of-war with you they are probably excited, but if you are on a walk and pass a new house and your dog growls, they may be afraid or anxious. Always remember to factor in the context to decipher what your dog is trying to communicate.

Dogs have the emotional capabilities of a two-year-old so becoming fluent in your dog's body language makes you a better advocate for them! You will get a better understanding of their overall comfort level as well as their emotional state in any situation.

Certain dog breeds exhibit distinct body language and cues based on their unique body types so understanding your dog's specific breed is essential for accurately interpreting their signals.

Your dog is constantly "communicating" with you. By learning to understand what they’re saying, you can build a stronger bond based on trust and respect. Additionally, this deeper insight into your dog’s emotional state will help you anticipate their behavior and prevent issues before they arise.

A great way to learn about dog body language is by working with a trainer. A skilled trainer can help you interpret your dog’s body language and teach you how to better understand the signals they’re sending through their posture and behavior thus becoming a better advocate for your dog.
